Common Symptoms of Stomach Cancer that Should Prompt Investigation:
- Persistent heartburn or indigestion
- Unexplained loss of appetite
- Feeling full after eating small amounts
- Unexplained weight loss
Other possible symptoms include nausea, difficulty swallowing, excessive burping, and black stools (a sign of bleeding). These symptoms can resemble common stomach problems, like a virus or ulcer, so it’s important to seek medical advice if they persist or feel unusual for you.
At present, Ireland does not have a national screening programme for stomach cancer. However, research is underway at Beacon Hospital and Connolly Hospital in Dublin, with support from the Department of Health and the European Union, to identify the most effective strategies for early detection. The European Commission has recognised the need for a national screening programme for stomach cancer, and these studies aim to enhance early diagnosis and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above and haven’t had them investigated, it’s essential to speak with your GP or practice nurse. Early detection and treatment are crucial for better outcomes, so don’t wait to get checked.
Stay informed, and remember: early detection can save lives.
