Some people are at higher risk of stomach cancer. Especially migrants and those who find health information hard to understand. Yet many face language barriers, limited access to care, and complex screening invitations that are difficult to follow.

To change this, Thomas More-hogeschool, together with literacy and skills centers, led focus groups in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Romania with migrant and Roma communities. They explored what people know, feel, and need when it comes to stomach cancer screening. This work is part of TOGAS, an EU4Health project working to improve gastric cancer prevention across Europe.

What did we learn?

  •  People trust their doctor’s advice
  • They want simple, clear invitation letters
  • Most are willing to be screened if it helps their health
  • Many prefer a breath test because it is quick and non-invasive

At TOGAS, we’re making screening more accessible, inclusive, and people-centered.
